Produced in the mid-20th Century, Lafayette Rittgers line of chalkware sculptures were obviously ahead of their time. These humorous "mid-century modern" statues were crafted in a style reminiscent of "Claymation" models, which were relatively obscure until the 1970s-1980s, when use of the "clay animation" artform became widespread. Rittgers bug-eyed sports and non-sports figures are now prized collectibles and given their plaster composition, they are relatively tough to come by in high grade condition.

Figure fanatics make a nice find with this 1942-1952 Rittgers figures lot of (4) studio signed and dated pieces. Featured are: 1942 "Boxing" set of (3) with a punching boxer, a crouching boxer who ducked to miss the punch and a swooning referee who caught the punch; and (1) 1952 "Towel Boy" individual piece, which has been seen as part of a wrestling trio. These venerable plaster statues all present in excellent condition, averaging (EX-MT to NM+) condition, with evident wear ranging as negligible on the crouching boxer, to minor on the other (3) pieces, which show only minor flecks of paint loss.
