Debuting for the Santos club team at the tender age of 15, Edson Arantes do Nascimento would become known as “Pele.” And known, he was! The face of international futbol, the Brazilian-born icon remains the lone player to win three FIFA World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970) en route to a world record 1,281 career goals. As he led Santos during the latter portion of his 19-year career with the club, Pele wore this jersey during the 1971 campaign. The white cotton pullover garment features a Santos logo patch sewn to the left breast, above which, two five-point gold stars accent the familiar club insignia. On the back, Pele’s legendary number “10” is sewn in thick tackle twill. It appears as if the blue “0” is a replacement, as the “1” has faded to dark gray. Within the ribbed collar, an “Athleta” size “10” tag has fabric content details on its reverse. The pitch relic shows phenomenal game use with fading about the twill components, puckering on the team logo and age-induced oxidation throughout. Impeccable provenance accompanies in the form of an LOA from the former Brazilian National Team Technical Coordinator.
