Long-since retired as arguably the greatest player of the Deadball Era, Honus Wagner was deservedly a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame’s inaugural class of five. The Steel City fixture remained with the Pirates for 39 years as a hitting instructor. It was in that capacity that Wagner executed this decidedly bold autograph. Likely at the request of a fan, Wagner signed this 4-15/16 x 3” blank index card. Dated “Dec 7 – 45” (in Wagner’s hand), the piece hails from the cryptic anniversary of America’s entry into World War II. Continuing in black-ink steel tip fountain pen, the Forbes Field legend has penned “J. Honus Wagner – Pirates Coach.” With flowing penmanship and even pen pressure, the scripting projects “perfect 10” potency. There are mounting remnants on the reverse, which in no way impinge upon the strength and quality of Wagner’s magnificent signature. Accompanying is a full photo LOA from JSA.
