Having made an indelible mark as a backstop for Connie Mack's Athletics dynasty, Hall of Famer Mickey Cochrane reinvented himself as a player/manager in the Motor City. Hired as the Tigers skipper for the 1934 season, Cochrane posed for this original Type I news service photograph, the image of which was subsequently used for his 1936 V355 World Wide Canadian cardboard collectible. The 7x9" black-and-white treasure depicts a smiling Cochrane in his shin guards and catcher's mitt (with a mask representing home plate). The reverse is home to "World Wide Photo" and "Philadelphia Inquirer" stampings, as well as the original caption sheet with a "DEC 22 1933" stamping. The item shows expected newsroom handling with grease pencil editorial markings on the obverse.
