With the emergence of Babe Ruth as an everyday player, the home run fever was here to stay in 1919. This 1921 Type I original photograph of Hall of Famer George Kelly provides ample evidence of a longball craze that has yet to subside. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, the 10x8” black-and-white heirloom depicts Kelly in his New York Giants home attire as he stands on the top step of the Polo Grounds dugout and selects from a long line of bats. The original caption sheet adhered to the back captures the moment in prose. Dated “5-4-21,” the typewritten sheet boasts of Kelly’s current season home run total of 7, which was one higher that Ruth’s corresponding total and had Kelly on pace to break Ruth’s unfathomable record of 54. Kelly, of course, tapered off, hitting only one more circuit clout that May and two in June to fall well off the pace (though he did lead the Senior Circuit with 23 that year). Ruth, incidentally, did break his own record, launching 59 round-trippers – a mark he would break in 1927.
