Having raced to an auspicious 8-1 start to the 1930 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates eventually faded to a fifth-place finish. The reasons for the Bucs’ decline certainly did not include the brothers Waner, as “Big Poison” and “Little Poison” hit .368 and .362, respectively. As hope sprung eternal at the Pirates spring training camp in Paso Robles, California that March, this original Type I photograph depicts the Hall of Fame siblings as they prepared for the season. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, the vintage black-and-white keepsake captures the pair shaking hands as Lloyd rests his hand on Paul’s shoulder. The item presents beautifully, with Associated Press and “MAR 24 1930” stampings on the reverse, as well as the original caption sheet.
